What does the job involve?

Summary: Requires the ability to make all major and complicated set-ups on any engine lathe either with or without tapes or tracing attachments. Must be able to set up and use all available lathe attachments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Operations consist of turning, facing, boring, drilling, reaming, tapping, thread chasing, ID and OD tapers, and tracing.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of assigned machine capabilities, speeds and feeds required to machine materials such as 321 and 347 stainless steel, Inconel, Inconel X, AM 350 and 355, N 155, 19-9 DL, Titanium, Aluminum, Monel, etc., with the use of high speed and carbide tool bits.
  • Grind or sharpen cutting tools such as turning, boring, grooving, recessing and threading tools.
  • Grind or sharpen drill bits and form tools that require special angles or radii.
  • Requires the ability to indicate fixtures on face plates in four (4) jaw chucks or to turn or bore soft jaws to enable machining of assigned materials to blueprint concentricity tolerances.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of blueprints and able to hold concentricity of .0005, tolerances of .0002 and finishes of 16 micro when required.
  • Use precision instruments such as micrometers, verniers, height gauges, depth gauges, telescope gauges, inside mics., dial bore indicators, surface plates, etc.
  • Machine any part to blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions, and handbook instructions.
  • Uses a variety of shop precision instruments such as micrometers, verniers, height gauges, depth gauges, telescope gauges, inside micrometers, dial bore indicators, surface plates, etc.
  • Interprets complicated blueprints and plans sequence of operations using advance shop mathematics to figure threads, tapers, compound angles and complicated contour where blueprint information is lacking.
  • May assist in breaking in new operators and instructing less experienced operators on difficult tasks.
  • Performs rework or other operations where duties are essentially the same or of a less difficult nature.
  • Follow all Senior policies and procedures.
  • Other duties with the work as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate simple instructions in English.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Able to use shop math.
  • Other Abilities: Must have knowledge of welding practice and procedures as applied to welding inspection including associated processing and fabrication operations. Must use blueprints to obtain primary dimensions and finish information.

Tools used:

  • Welding inspection checking fixtures, micrometers, scales, surface plates and tables, inspection stamps. At all times must have a complete set of personal tools adequate to perform the work covered by the job classification. Various types of surface plates and other inspection setup accessories; precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier gauges, scales and all inspection tools; hardness testing equipment.

Materials used:

  • Welded parts and assemblies, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys in the form of sheet tubular stock, machined and formed parts.
