About AARCC: The AARCC endeavors to empower African/Black/Caribbean (ABC) students and community members to explore, honor, and respect their intersecting identities throughout their educational journey. The African American Resource and Cultural Center aims to be a hub for the Black community on campus while addressing systemic issues that impact the ABC community. The African American Resource and Cultural Center is a part of the Resource Centers at UCSC, which is housed under Student Success & Equity.

About the Resource Centers: UCSC Resource Centers offer counter-spaces for students who are queer, trans, non-binary, womxn, and people of color, and engage the broader campus about issues and challenges facing our communities. The Resource Centers impact institutional policies and campus climate, and RCs offer programs and services to foster student's personal and professional growth, through community-based leadership development. The Resource Centers' vision is for students to feel fully affirmed in their diverse and intersecting identities, empowered in their academic success, and graduate with a sense of belonging. Resource Centers include the following units: African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Indian Resource Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), El Centro: Chicanx Latinx Resource Center (CLRC), Lionel Cantu Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex Resource Center (Cantu Queer Resource Center), and the Womxn's Center.

About the Division: The UC Santa Cruz Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), led by the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Success, consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 3 major units and 21 departments. The division provides campus-wide coordination and leadership for student success programs, activities, and initiatives, as well as a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. Its work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student. DSAS aspires to ensure every student feels welcome, supported, and a sense of belonging during their time on campus. About Student Success and Equity (SSE): The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio of departments is a branch of DSAS focused on academic support services, advising/counseling, student life/co-curricular programming, student identity development, and retention/student success initiatives. Student Success and Equity provides services to the campus community with over 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has over 64 career employees and 475 student staff employees operating in 8 facilities/locations. JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the African American Resource & Cultural Center Director, the Program Coordinator coordinates multiple programs and performs administrative for the African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), including supervision of student interns. The AARCC Program Coordinator works with student populations and issues as they relate to academic success and personal development in a comprehensive university setting. The incumbent also assists in developing and executing co-curricular, academic, educational, and collaborative programming amongst all the Resource Centers in partnership with other Division of Student Affairs & Success units and academic departments, with particular focus on AARCC programs. Resource Centers include African American Resource and Cultural Center (AARCC), American Resource & Cultural Center (AIRC), Asian American/Pacific Islander Resource Center (AA/PIRC), El Centro: Chicanx Latinx Resource Center, Womxn's Center, and Lionel Cantu Queer Resource Center.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $24.96 - $29.24 / Hourly. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Program Planning

  • Provide essential support services and basic academic support services for the African/Black/Caribbean communities at UCSC.
  • Assist Resource Center Directors and Specialists in producing and promoting large-scale events and projects, with a particular focus on programs and events out of the African American Resource & Cultural Center.
  • Plan and coordinate logistics for AARCC programs and activities such as the Welcome Black BBQ, Black Love Gala, and annual Black Graduation Ceremony.
  • Plan and coordinate specific cultural activities aimed at outreach, recruitment, and retention of historically underrepresented African/Black/Caribbean students within such as Black Academy.
  • Develop and oversee community service projects; handle all aspects of program coordination, including finances, fundraising, speaker/facilitator relations, content development, publicity, and necessary materials.
  • Evaluate programs in writing, including statistical data; report regularly on content and success of programs.
  • Maintain relationships with internal and external organization's stakeholders, particularly internal and external organizations that serve African/Black/Caribbean communities, important to program success.
  • Plan and coordinate collaborative programs with Resource Centers, campus units, academic departments, and student groups. Including the Office of African, Black, and Caribbean Student Success and ONYX staff group.
  • In partnership with other professional staff at the African American Resource & Cultural Center, co-develop and implement training for various campus units, including residential staff, student groups, and classes.

25% - Supervising and Supporting Students

  • Provide transactional advice and guidance to student leaders participating in the AARCC internships and mentorship programs. Facilitate student development in leadership, communication skills, project coordination, and establishing goals.
  • General supervision of student workers, volunteers, and interns; provide training, orientation, supervision, and evaluation of student staff and volunteers who work on various projects in collaboration with the AARCC Director
  • Assist in the selection, hiring, and training of student interns and volunteers.
  • Maintain a commitment to recruitment and management efforts to support the achievement of campus/departmental affirmative action goals and enhance staff diversity.
  • Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for large-scale programs, including communicating with students, supporting publicity, and assigning tasks.
  • Advise Student Program Coordinators and Lead Interns on program development, learning outcomes, and project management.
  • Under the guidance of the AARCC Director, RC Directors, or RC specialists, resolve non-complex individual cases regarding student affairs or student life.
  • Advise individual students and student staff/interns on academic, career, and personal issues; make needed referrals; develop and update referral listings.
  • Monitor student intern academic performance and maintain accurate grade reporting information.

25% - Program Administration

  • Serve as an advisor to a small student service operation, which may include training students and staff, preparing budgets, and fiscal analysis.
  • Represent the AARCC Director at relevant campus committee meetings; serve as primary administrative support for staff and committees requiring staff participation; responsible for minute preparation during weekly professional and student staff meetings.
  • Supervise and maintain student intern schedules, work logs, and chore tasks within the space, as needed.
  • Coordinate AARCC staff and student participation and schedule for on-campus resource fairs.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of campus and unit policies, procedures, and regulations related to unit programming; furnish such information as necessary and make referrals as appropriate.
  • Establish work standards and office procedures and ensure consistent application, in consultation with the AARCC Director.
  • Assist in fiscal management as needed, including creating, reviewing encumbrances, and submitting necessary forms for purchases, reimbursements, and other fiscal matters.
  • Provide recommendations and suggestions for changes and development of new activities and services as needed.
  • Assess programming needs; work with African/Black/Caribbean communities to design and implement programs; develop programming with student organizations, colleges, resource centers, and other campus units. Including but not limited to working with Onyx and the Office of ABC Student Success.
  • Maintain databases of AARCC internship program alumni, staff/faculty affiliated with AARCC programs, and student leaders from African/Black/Caribbean groups.
  • Maintain archives of events; design materials to evaluate, assess, and maintain statistics and produce reports on programming events.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience in creating, implementing, and publicizing diverse, successful, mostly low-budget large-and small-scale events.
  • Excellent initiative, resourcefulness, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and abilities sufficient to independently establish priorities and complete concurrent assignments with frequent interruptions and noisy work environment.
  • Strong cultural competency skills to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those with identities served by this Resource Center.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly with African/Black/Caribbean students
  • Knowledge/understanding of diversity issues in higher education, particularly affecting African American, Black, and Caribbean identified students.
  • Related administrative experience sufficient to support the AARCC, Resource Center Directors, and staff.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to give, receive and record clear, concise information or directions (written and oral), facilitate discussions, and mediate conflict resolutions.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy, sensitivity and helpfulness when interacting with students, faculty and staff from diverse cultural or socio-economic backgrounds or handling sensitive issues.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports and documents; ability to analyze data, present findings, and suggest resolutions.
  • Ability to learn policies and procedures from both verbal and written sources; ability to apply and explain office policies and procedures with consistency.
  • Knowledge and experience using standard office computer applications such as Google Email and Calendars, Word, Excel, database software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidates must be eligible for licensure to drive in the state of California.
  • Experience in website creation or content management.
  • Experience in advising, especially to college-age students.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
