EHS Specialist - CA Region

Role Summary/Purpose

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist's primary role and purpose will be to oversee and lead EHS at our facilities and customer sites located throughout CA. The EHS specialist must have strong interpersonal/leadership/communication skills to interact effectively with employees at all levels within the company.

Essential Responsibilities:

The EHS Specialist will demonstrate leadership in communicating EHS business goals, programs, and processes across the organization's CA Operations. This includes the following specific responsibilities:

  • Initiate and influence integration of EHS policies and practices into the business
  • Lead and manage the implementation of EHS regulations/requirements for employee safety, with emphasis on Safety Culture, Training, and Concern Reporting.
  • Lead and manage the implementation of EHS regulations/requirements for sustainability of the environment/ecosystem. This includes air permitting, wastewater permitting, stormwater permitting, waste management, and emergency planning.
  • Investigate industrial accidents, injuries, occupational diseases, near misses and environmental issues / misses to determine root causes and preventive measures
  • Report and review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections, or environmental testing
  • Implement / modify EHS programs and procedures to ensure company compliance
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements including retention of all required records and documentation
  • Recommend process safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemicals
  • Oversee Industrial Hygiene testing as required.
  • Verify that safety equipment such as hearing protection and respirators is available to employees, and monitor their use of such equipment to ensure proper use and fit
  • Work with consultants and contractors on related EHS issues; maintain liaisons with outside organizations such as fire departments, and third party contractors to facilitate emergency response
  • Plan emergency response drills
  • Develop and implement EHS Training programs in line with Corporate EHS requirements.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of 5 years of EHS Leadership experience in manufacturing/industrial settings.
  • Travel within CA up to 30% required (Stockton, CA)

Desired Characteristics

  • Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Knowledge of EHS regulations specific to the State of California (Air, Wastewater, Stormwater, Haz/Universal Waste, and Tiered Permitting)
  • Working relationships/knowledge of CA regulatory agencies (BAAQMD/SCAQMD, DTSC, Regional Water Board, CUPAs, CDTFA, Municipal Water Districts, Cal-EPA, Cal-OSHA)
  • Strong communication and documentation skills with attention to detail; self-starter that works well in a team environment
  • Knowledge of industrial water industry processes (ion exchange/regeneration, reverse osmosis, etc).
  • Spanish language proficiency.
  • Knowledge of OSHA Injury and Illness Recordkeeping procedures
  • Compliance Auditing skills
  • Knowledge of EPA Sampling/Testing methodology
  • Knowledge and experience using the Gensuite EHS tool
  • Knowledge of DOT Fleet and Shipping Requirements
  • Experience in Workers Compensation programs
  • Site Security Programs
  • OSHA VPP knowledge and experience
  • Ergonomic Assessment Skills
  • Knowledge and experience preparing/maintaining various EHS ongoing reports including emission inventory, SMRs, SWPPP, Tier 2/HMBP, and Emergency Response Plans.
  • Certification in related subject (CHMM, CSP, CIH, QISP, etc.)

Compensation: The salary range is tied to the market for similarly benchmarked roles. The range is not an absolute, but a guide, and offers will be based on the individual candidate's knowledge, skills, experience and market conditions, as well as internal peer equity. Depending upon all of the preceding considerations for the final selected individual candidate, the offer may be lower or higher than the stated range of $70,000 to $90,000 annually
