Job Summary

Applies wide-ranging experience to manage and lead complex and unprecedented projects that impact the medical center, campus, enterprise or external partnerships Leads projects with little or no campus, medical center or Office of the President precedent where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Considered a subject matter expert in the organization and industry and influences and guides institutional project management methods and processes. the industry. Influences and guides the project management methods and processes used in campus, medical center or Office of the President projects. Projects may be passed off to the owners to implement and maintain. Requires level of expertise in project management such as project management certificate and / or quality improvement processes like Six Sigma or Lean or equivalent project management experience.


With work direction provided by the Associate Dean for Admnistration and Finance, and Chief of Staff, the Project Manager will be responsible for contibuting to new and ongoing School projects and programs from multiple functional areas, including but not limited to patient care, education, research, or external/internal engagements. The Project Manager will plan, execute and supervise projects to meet School strategic objectives and to ensure project delivery within budget and/or on time. The incumbent will develop project plans, convene project core team meetings, drive project deliverables forward, and proactively communicate project status updates to UCSF School of Dentistry leadership.

This position is a contract role for two years from the date of hire with possibility to be extended.

UCSF Dental Center

UCSF Dental Center is a cohesive entity within the structure of UCSF's School of Dentistry that oversees and operates all clinical activities in the dental school. Its primary goal is to provide outstanding, seamless, cutting-edge patient-centered care. The Dental Center also aims to provide state of the art clinical experiences and education to students; deliver cost-effective dental health care; and generate resources for reinvestment in the School of Dentistry's educational, clinical and scholarship missions. UCSF Dental Center's primary services include all advanced dental specialty programs, and the general dentistry and specialty faculty practices. A majority of the Dental Center's clinical facilities are located at the Parnassus Campus, with affiliated clinics at Buchanan Dental Center and an additional presence at Mission Bay and the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or minimum 8 years of project management experience
  • Minimum 10+ years of related experience
  • Requires expert knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts. Has a thorough understanding of how programs relate to other business strategies and initiatives. Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner in order to achieve results that are significant in scope.
  • Experience analyzing highly complex projects with broad impact to the institution. Demonstrated ability to manage project progress within time and budget constraints.
  • Effective skill at tracking effort and project progress. Demonstrated highly advanced conceptual and planning skills to analyze projects of broad and diverse scope. Demonstrated expert organization and project management skills. Understands the cost impact of projects, project tracking tools and metrics.
  • Experienced mentor and leader of teams with experience leading a team of professionals.
  • Demonstrated competency in selecting and implementing project management methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrated highly effective writing skills on complex subjects. Strong knowledge of all aspects of communications. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with executive-level management on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrated sophisticated organization and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks. Demonstrated effective writing skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to anticipate systemwide obstacles and plan for contingencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of initiatives and an understanding of impact to the organization of such initiatives.
  • Requires expert knowledge of project management principles, theories, and concepts. Has a thorough understanding of how programs relate to other business strategies and initiatives. Demonstrated ability to integrate critical information across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Project management certification from a reputable organization such as PMP, CSM or ACP to include a qualifying exam and / or quality assurance processes like Six Sigma or Lean or equivalent project management experience required.
  • Experience in a higher education and/or health care setting.
